Homemade Salsa

salsa1

What better to go alongside homemade guacamole than homemade salsa?  Or, if you are just interested in salsa….that works too!

I have only made this a couple of times and I continue to revise the recipe to the desires and tastes of my family.  You know how that goes, someone wants it a bit tangier, one wants it less chunky, etc.  So, I think I’ll give you the basic ingredients and let you determine, by tasting as you go, just how you’d like your very own salsa to turn out!

Ingredients Lists:

  • 4 ripe medium sized tomatoes
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • Fresh cilantro finely chopped
  • ½ onion finely chopped
  • ½ can mild green chilies, chopped
(Use whatever type of chili you
      enjoy best)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 lime
  • Salt

Instructions:

1. Coarsely chop 2 of the tomatoes, mince the garlic and finely chop about ½ a bunch of cilantro and place in a blender. Mix until smooth.

2. Add finely chopped onion, chilies, sugar, lime juice and salt to taste.  Mix together then pour into a mixing bowl.

3. Chop the remaining two tomatoes to the desired size and stir into the mixture to add texture and bulk.

The two real variables in this recipe are the type of chili you add, mild green versus jalapeño versus chipotle and the size of the chopped tomatoes. Different chilies give a different taste and heat index while the size that you chop up the remaining two tomatoes will either yield smooth or chunky salsa! Experiment until you get it just right, and enjoy!
