When you have children, you learn how to improvise – when it comes to all sorts of things, and Halloween costumes are just one of those things. My kids usually started thinking about their costumes about 2 days before trick or treat. Needless to say, they were never what they wanted to be!
See what I mean? How many kids do you know that want to be political figures? Hahaha, just kidding, these aren’t my kids; I just thought this shot was funny. Now let’s take a look at several costumes I have made in the past and they all use matching sweat pants and sweat shirts as the base of the costume!
Fun and Easy Blueberry Costume
The first time I made a costume like this was when my daughter was about four or five. At that time she had a purple sweat suit that I pinned purple balloons to. I made a leaf hat for her out of felt and she went as a bunch of grapes. So, when purple isn’t the color of the season, grapes can easily become blueberries!
Daffodil Costume This idea was born out of the blueberries or grapes costume idea because of the use of the sweat suit. So, if a child were to wear a green sweat suit, couldn’t they be a flower by simply wearing a felt hat in the shape of a flower? Of course they could!
My son, Cameron was always interested in my sewing. I guess young eyes see the sewing machine as a true marvel. Well in the midst of an important project, Cameron decided he wanted to be a bat and he had to have the costume..NOW! Like most working Moms, guilt sets in and you do whatever it takes to make your little one know you care and love them. So I whipped up a bat costume and here’s how easy it is to make.
My friend Jennifer is a dog lover and she was devastated when she lost her sweet puppy of 13 years. In honor of her favorite pet, she helped us make a “My Favorite Pet” costume. Like many of the Halloween costumes we’ve described, a sweat suit is the main ingredient. Why not? They come in a myriad of colors and cold weather gear can be worn underneath them!
I honestly don’t remember how we got started with the spaghetti and meatball costume, but we had a ball with it! No pun intended! Notice that it, like many of the other costumes we have been writing about start with a sweat suit. This one gets pretty elaborate, but it isn’t anything you don’t already have laying around the house!
Rat Costume You dirty rat! Instead of a sweat suit, although in northern climates, a sweat suit in gray would be perfect for this costume; in Florida we wear shorts and T-shirts! What makes this costume is the baseball cap turned rat face. You can’t see it in this pose, but there was a rat tail pinned to the shorts that matched the beige tip of the rat’s snout!
When I get some extra time I’ll have to search through my earlier photos of costumes I made for Brittany. She was a princess once, a butterfly, Minnie Mouse, a clown….sounds like enough material for another article!!
So grab those inexpensive sweat pants and sweat shirt combinations the next time you are out at your local discount store. Maybe choose a fun color then decide what to make it into! Shari
